Most will advertize on the packaging that the paint is water-based and easy to clean. Water based paints can be cleaned off from any surface. So you can let you child paint as messy as they want to, safe in the knowledge that you will be able to take care of the mess.
If you have an older child, you may want to encourage a hobby craft that is more refined. A good idea is to buy pieces that they can use to personalize all of the things that they own. When children reach a certain age, they want to be individual and express their personality. Crafts can really help with this. They may want to make their own photograph frames of their friends or decorate the walls and doors of their bedroom. You should encourage this. All children need to express themselves and feel as though their ideas are special.
