RC Hobby

Remote control racing is a great hobby for a child. It gets them up and active, away from the computer and learning how to construct and race a vehicle with other children their own age. If your child has expressed interest in an RC hobby, you need to be aware of the different types of remote control car and the advantages and disadvantages they offer.

 Electric remote control cars

These are the most popular type of car for the person new to the RC hobby. Because they are electric, they will need a battery to function. Typically this battery will last about 15 minutes if you operate the car at full speed. So, if you are going to be spending all day out racing, it is a smart idea to buy three batteries, so that you can rotate them and charge them as needed. This way the action does not have to stop.

Expect the off road electric car to reach speed somewhere between 15 and 30 mph. The on road version can go slightly faster with a top speed of 40mph. Most children prefer the off road model because they can go anywhere and are more rugged to keep up with your child's adventurous fingers.

The electric car is recommended for beginners and younger drivers who are new to the hobby. They are also considerably cheaper than the nitro alternative, which we will take a look at now.

 Nitro remote control cars

The nitro cars do not operate on batteries, instead they will need nitro fuel to operate. While this is not as flammable as gasoline, it can still catch on fire and will produce exhaust fumes that are very similar to professional racing cars.

You have probably guessed by now that these cars are much faster than the electric alternative and you assumption is correct. Most nitro cars can reach a speed of approximately 60mph and the experienced RC hobby enthusiast can make these cars go even faster.

The nitro car is not for the newcomer. They are hard to handle and require skill and precision. They are definitely something that should be mastered after the driver feels comfortable with the electric remote control car. Although your child may beg and pled for the nitro remote control car, if they have not had the necessary experience, it could be a foolish investment. Encourage them to get to know the electric car, compete and if they are serious about the hobby, then they can upgrade to the nitro car.
