The Hobby Shop

The hobby shop is a place of wonder for both young and old. Whether you are obsessed with the latest comic book movie and want to own the action figures or you are a model train enthusiast with an impressive collection, the hobby shop has something for you.

If you are visiting a hobby shop for the first time with your child, you may be walking in without any idea of what to buy. See this as a good thing. The hobby shop will be full of ideas and inspiration. Walk around the store until you find something that they love the idea of. Money of course is an issue for most people; so try to avoid buying an expensive remote control car unless they have shown some interest in the idea for a long time.

Most young boys like trains, planes and automobiles. A great way to encourage this interest and also get them creating is to buy miniature models of these vehicles. Many hobby shops will also hold workshops, an event where your child can learn to assemble and paint these vehicles with other children their age. If you are unsure that your local shop has such a workshop, enquire about it and if they do not, ask if they know of another hobby shop that does.

Another popular workshop is learning how to use and construct a train set. Train sets can be quite complex to manage. You have to learn how to join the tracks and how to make the trains change lanes. But as a parent you should be aware that train sets could be quite expensive compared to other hobbies that you may find available. Traditionally train sets are something that is passed down from the father.

Slot car racing is another hobby that involves constructing a track and decorating a vehicle. If you have limited space in your home you may think that you do not have enough room for a slot car racing track. But thanks to the digital tracks, you may not need as much space as you think. Digital tracks can race up to eight cars on only two lanes. These miniature cars actually change lanes to overtake the competition. So the track can be slimmer and also provide a more realistic racing experience for you child and their friends. Be warned though: racing on a digital track is much harder than the traditional analog track. But if your child is mature and showing an interest in slot car racing, the digital tracks are a great alternative.
